Finchley Central: Green Retrofit

GEF delivered sustainable design consultancy for retrofitting Finchley Central depot, improving thermal efficiency and integrating renewable energy technologies.

Project Overview

As part of Transport for London’s ongoing sustainability initiatives, Green Energy Futures supported the green retrofit of the Finchley Central depot. The project focused on improving thermal efficiency, integrating renewable technologies, and designing energy-smart systems to future-proof the facility.

The existing depot building featured outdated systems and poor thermal performance, making it energy-inefficient and unsuitable for supporting modern electric rail operations. A comprehensive design-led approach was required to align the retrofit with TfL’s sustainability goals.

Green Energy Futures delivered a full suite of consultancy services, including:

  • Thermal Performance Upgrades: Provided design support for roof and cavity wall insulation and glazing enhancements.
  • Renewable Integration: Facilitated mounting and system design for heat pumps and solar PV installations.
  • Heating & Electrical Systems: Delivered concept validation and integration design for electric heating and immersion systems.
  • Lighting & Controls: Developed new lighting layouts and smart control systems for improved efficiency.
  • Systems Strip-Out Planning: Designed removal of outdated and redundant infrastructure to streamline energy use.

Outcomes of the works included:

  • Improved building envelope for greater energy efficiency and comfort.
  • Readiness for renewable energy systems, reducing long-term emissions.
  • Modernised lighting and heating with smart control integration.
